Fever outbreak in Cape Town

Don't be alarmed by the title of this blog!  I'm referring to the 2010 Soccer World Cup which is being held in South Africa and which kicks off  (sorry) on Friday 11 June.  Capetonians are always a little cautious about reacting to events which might require them to nail their colours to the mast, so to speak,  but every day more and more cars are sporting the national flag and wing mirror covers or "ear covers", as I heard someone describe them.

This little fellow with the wide grin is Zakumi, the official South African World Cup mascot who can be seen in varying sizes all over Cape Town, but especially on the back ledges of  people's cars.  You can find out more about Zakumi and the World Cup by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

My daughter posts a photograph to Shuttercal each day as part of a 365 pix a year project.  In addition to the calendar which is being produced on line, she has already received the first three months' prints and as her aim is to post a picture which reflects some aspect of the manner in which she spent each day, the prints form a visual diary of the year so far.  The other beneficial aspect is that in spite of being inundated with her postgrad studies, she carries her camera in her bag each day and gets to use it regularly.  Shuttercal.com is an American site and well worth taking a look at.

In a following post I'll tell you about South Africa's dreaded secret weapon for the World Cup - the mighty,  the awe inspiring, the one and only Vuvuzela!
